Starting an Art Supply Business Quote: Originally Posted by tomnackid Does anyone know anything about opening an art supply store?
I have this crazy idea of becoming a shopkeeper and was wondering how to go about starting up. There were 2 art supply stores in my area and both have closed recently. One, a Koenig Art emporium, closed because the owner wanted to retire, the other, a Dick Blick retail store, was in a poor location and since Connecticut already has another Dick Blick I guess they decided to cut heir losses.
My personal feeling is that the day of the small shopkeeper is over in the United States of America. Opening a new art store and competing in the crowded retail marketplace requires the same technology, marketing expertise, and economies of scale that the chains have.
Remember that you compete not only with other art supplies chains, but with multi-billion dollar corporations like Michaels and Hobby Lobby that also sell art supplies. Originally Posted by tomnackid What I would really like to know is how people think the best way to go about it is?
ARE there any art store franchises out there or are all the chains fully owned and operated by the company? Do I buy supplies wholesale directly from the manufacturers? I live in an area that has quite a few artists Fairfield County CT but no real art supply stores anymore.
Or am I just crazy to begin with? There is in fact one other art materials company that does have several franchise owner-operators. Two of their franchises are already in your area, and a third is rumored to be opening in nearby New York City.
My personal opinion about franchises is that they make more sense in some fields than others. Obviously, they are successful in the food industry, where the product is very standardized.
For the McDonalds or Subway franchise owner, affiliation with a national chain provides access to technological and marketing benefits, as well as a recognized brand name and greater purchasing power.
But in the art supplies field, I question whether these benefits really hold. Furthermore, there is the issue of "channel conflict" that is inherent in any industry that sells both directly to consumers, and through retail stores. In many fields where there are franchise opportunities, there is a great deal of conflict between franchisees and the parent company.
Get a job working in an art store and get it out of your system. You are just the kind of person that Dick Blick loves to hire in retail stores.
